Infosys provides immersive sports viewing experience with cutting-edge network engineering
Infosys has developed an interesting application of 5G with an audio-visual use case for bringing a live sports event to a virtual reality (VR) headset. This kind of application is relevant in the present times when mass gatherings are limited or prohibited because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Commercialization could lead to lucrative business models where a sports organizer could sell licenses for such experiences. The Infosys team has converted the capability to a platform and extended it to several other scenarios that are sensitive to bandwidth and response time. However, besides the network implications, ISG cautions about certain challenges that VR-oriented technology approaches have faced in the past. With the high cost of VR headsets, Infosys would need to work with customers such as sports event authorities, telcos and broadcasters to explore viable, subscription-based, cost-effective VR equipment options for end users to accelerate adoption of its new technology.
