Enterprise IT leaders are projecting dramatic transformations of their IT infrastructures, and public cloud infrastructure will play a prominent role in this transformation. ISG research indicates that over 30 percent of enterprise workloads will move to the public cloud by 2020, with recent interactions with ISG clients indicating that this number could grow even faster - upwards of 50 percent.
One of the key factors to determine where a workload should operate is cost. However, calculating costs in a public cloud environment is very different, and much more challenging, than traditional in-house or hosted comparisons. This is due to several factors, the primary being that costs in the public cloud are based on usage, while costs for in-house and hosted model are based on assets and labor. Comparing these two is difficult and time consuming.
