A distinct security category is emerging around protecting artificial intelligence (AI) itself, driven by the shift from pilot projects to embedded operational use. As AI becomes part of everyday workflows, the risk surface expands beyond traditional controls. Enterprises now need visibility into how employees prompt and rely on AI systems, how autonomous agents execute tasks and where sensitive data is introduced, transformed or exposed. These interactions occur across chat interfaces, APIs and embedded applications, often without consistent oversight.
What matters: existing security models were not designed for probabilistic systems that generate, infer and act. Monitoring user behavior alone is insufficient. Organizations must also track model behavior, including what data is accessed, how outputs are formed and whether guardrails are consistently enforced. This includes understanding prompt context, tracking response variability and identifying when outputs involve risk such as sensitive data leakage or policy violations. These requirements introduce new telemetry that spans endpoint activity, identity context and data lineage, but also extends into model-level observability.
The implication is structural. AI security does not fit cleanly into a single domain. It draws from endpoint security, identity governance and data security, while extending each. Endpoint tools can capture user interaction patterns but lack insight into model processing. Identity systems enforce access but often stop at authentication, without accounting for how AI agents act on behalf of users. Data security tools classify and protect information but may not track how data is transformed once it enters a model. The result is a convergence layer where controls must operate continuously across inputs, processing and outputs.
Enterprises that treat AI as just another application will miss these dependencies. A more effective approach establishes three capabilities: 1) behavioral monitoring for users and agents; 2) policy enforcement tied to identity and context; and 3) data controls that persist across prompts, outputs and downstream workflows. Behavioral monitoring should include prompt analysis, agent activity tracking and anomaly detection. Policy enforcement must adapt dynamically based on user role, data sensitivity and execution context. Data controls should extend beyond classification to include usage tracking and output validation.
Operationalizing these capabilities requires integration. Siloed tools create gaps where risk accumulates. Security leaders should focus on unifying telemetry, normalizing policy frameworks and aligning ownership across security, data and AI teams. ISG Research asserts that through 2029, enterprise buyers that align security architecture around AI-driven control planes and non-human identity (NHI) governance will reduce operational complexity, while those maintaining fragmented tools will see rising cost and risk exposure.
Bottom line: securing AI requires rethinking control planes, not adding incremental tools. Organizations should prioritize unified visibility, consistent policy enforcement and end-to-end data governance. Early investment in these areas will reduce risk as AI adoption scales and becomes more autonomous.
