As an increasing proportion of enterprise software becomes replaced or augmented by artificial intelligence agents, capabilities for application, data and API management are evolving accordingly. Orchestrating communication and integration among applications, data, systems, tools and processes is essential to enabling agents to execute business processes through autonomous actions. Established integration specialists are rapidly evolving product portfolios to facilitate agent development and governance, alongside more traditional approaches to application and data integration. A prime example is Boomi, which is building on its established expertise in application, data and API management with new advances to enable data curation and activation.
Boomi was founded in 2000 and initially became successful as one of several providers offering cloud-based platform integration as a more flexible, low-code approach to application and data integration than traditional on-premises tools. The company was acquired by Dell in 2010 before becoming independent again in May 2021, backed by investment firms Francisco Partners and TPG Capital in a deal valued at $4 billion. Boomi boasts more than 30,000 customers and has reinvigorated its strategy in recent years through a combination of internal development and acquisitions.
In 2024, Boomi boosted its API management functionality with the acquisition of the API control plane business of APIIDA and API management assets from Cloud Software Group. That was followed in December 2024 by the announcement of a deal to add Rivery’s data integration and data operations products and expertise. More recently, the company snapped up file-based integration specialist Thru in May 2025, followed by MCP and AI gateway provider Lunar.dev in May 2026.
Boomi was classified as Exemplary in the 2026 ISG Buyers Guides for Application Integration and AI Agents, as well as the 2025 Buyers Guides for Data Pipelines, Data Orchestration, Data Integration and Master Data Management. Boomi was also a provider of Assurance in the 2026 Buyers Guides for Agentic and Generative AI and AI Governance and Operations.
Boomi Enterprise Platform is a distributed integration environment designed to enable enterprises to integrate and automate data, applications and agents across cloud, on-premises and edge infrastructure. Core capabilities include integration and automation, data management, API management and agent management. The latter was the primary focus at the Boomi World 2026 customer conference in May, which included the launch of new capabilities for orchestrating agentic workflows, agentic engineering and governed agent connectivity, as well as grounded agent context and localized agent infrastructure. I assert that through 2028, enterprises will prioritize the adoption of AI platform products that support AI governance and operations alongside the development of agentic and GenAI applications.
For governed agent connectivity, Boomi announced Boomi Connect to provide connectivity between AI tools and models and more than one thousand enterprise applications. Boomi Connect is a managed Model Context Protocol connector service designed to surface metadata from enterprise applications as context for agents with auditable identity, authentication and access management. Boomi also introduced MCP Registry, providing enterprises with a catalog of internal and external MCP servers. Boomi Connect will be boosted by MCP gateway capabilities acquired with Lunar.dev, which will add functionality for cost management and observability as well as enhanced connectivity across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
Regarding orchestrated agentic workflows, Boomi introduced Boomi Orchestrate, which automatically generates workflows in response to business challenges and outcomes described in natural language. The company also introduced a preview of Agent SIM, which simulates agentic behavior prior to deployment, enabling users to validate agents before taking them into production.
Also new is the ability to embed and invoke agents created with Boomi’s Agentstudio environment in enterprise applications. The recently launched Boomi Companion enables developers to design, build, test and deploy Boomi integrations using AI-assisted development tools—such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex or GitHub Copilot. Providing context for AI agents has become a primary focus for most software providers, and Boomi announced additional capabilities to complement the role provided by Boomi Connect. In March, the company announced Boomi Meta Hub to ground agents in trusted business definitions with capabilities for business glossary curation and verification and endorsement by business experts. At Boomi World 2026, it added Boomi Knowledge Hub, a managed offering for creating retrieval augmented generation pipelines to provide access to trusted data sources.
While Boomi offers a cloud-based interface for integration and automation, the company’s distributed runtime can be deployed on-premises or at the edge, with added capabilities to enhance support for sovereign AI strategies, including a Distributed Agent Runtime to support the deployment of agents on-premises, as well as support for multi-region instances in Agentstudio to enable deployment of agents in the US, UK, Japan and Australia. The company also announced a partnership with Red Hat to take advantage of its hybrid cloud capabilities.
The rise of AI agents does not mean that enterprises will abandon or completely replace more traditional application and data integration processes. Yet agent development, management and governance are driving growth opportunities for integration providers. AI agents are also augmenting established integration processes by enabling enterprises to automate integration workflows and provide connectivity to the ecosystem of AI models and tools. Providing context for agents is critical to enterprise adoption. I recommend that enterprises assessing providers to address data, application and agent integration and automation include Boomi in these evaluations.
